Jeff Hornacek fired by New York Knicks after 2 seasons

According to ESPN, Knicks president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry informed Hornacek of his fate upon the team's return to NY.

The Knicks beat the Cavaliers 110-98, though Cleveland largely rested their stars.

According to ESPN the two-year head coach was given his walking papers when the Knicks returned to NY after the team won the meaningless final game of the season (couldn't even tank right).

Frank Vogel (left) and Jeff Hornacek, former head coaches of the Magic and the Knicks, respectively, were out of the job as soon as the season ended.

Hornacek was sacked Wednesday night after the Knicks concluded their season with a win over Cleveland.

The Knicks intend to contact Villanova's Jay Wright about their head coaching vacancy, the Daily News has learned. "We sincerely appreciate the efforts and considerable contributions to the team and wish him well in his future endeavors". The loss of their top gun in Kristaps Porzingis to an ACL tear in early February certainly didn't help matters, but even before that happened the Knicks were a mediocre team at best.

The Knicks are seriously aiming the free agent market in the summer of 2019 when they will have significant salary-cap space and Porzingis back to full strength.

Stackhouse is considered a top coaching candidate after he guided Toronto's G-League team to a championship past year. The Knicks made the decision after beating Cleveland on Wednesday night to finish a 29-53 season.

Hornacek was hired by then-team president Phil Jackson and then-GM Mills prior to the 2016-17 season. He's viewed as one of the rising stars in the National Basketball Association coaching world after his long playing career and will get a head job sooner rather than later.

Mills and general manager Scott Perry said they didn't see enough improvement on the court and enough communication and accountability off it. "It's hard to do anything because all you're thinking about is not to mess up". They are out of the playoffs for the fifth season in a row, and they own just one playoff series victory in the past 18 years.
