Boy Scouts dropping 'boy' from name of flagship program

The Boy Scouts of America is changing its iconic name to welcome girls into the organization, but it's unclear how the change will be received locally.

The name change only applies to the program now called Boy Scouts, which is available for teens ages 11-17.

So far, more than 3,000 girls have joined close to 170 Cub Scout packs across the country participating in the first phase of the new policy.

Surbaugh said he believes that boys and girls in Scouts BSA both will call themselves "scouts" only as opposed to adding "boy" or "girl" in front, the outlet said. The Cub Scout program, for ages 7 to 10 years, will keep its name, Kirk said.

"A program for girls age 11 to 17 will be announced in the coming year with a projected introduction in 2019".

Schultz also said the organization was surprised about the name change for the flagship program of Boy Scouts of America.

"Our experiences are created for and with girls", said Andrea Bastiani Archibald, the Girl Scouts' Family Engagement Officer.

"I am a proud Eagle Scout", Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, tweeted.

Scouts BSA will be divided by gender for the most part. In October 2017, the Boy Scouts unanimously voted to begin allowing girls to join, starting in 2018. As his organization prepares to welcome girls into its ranks, Gillick said he looks forward to the changes.

The name change does not affect the organization's principal name - Boy Scouts of America - said Dave Kirk, executive director of the Snake River Council. "It is a national disgrace that girls are being allowed into the Boy Scouts". The formerly-named Boy Scouts will begin admitting them next year.

Last fall, the BSA announced that they'd be welcoming girls into the younger Cub Scouts program, BSA spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos said in a statement to ABC News.

MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY-- For more than a century, the older youth program of the Boy Scouts of America has been known as "Boy Scouts".

Both organizations have experienced decreased membership in recent years, the Associated Press reports. We have always been about girls, and if it is getting them ready for the wilderness or the boardroom, we're about girls leadership.
