Terre Haute police officer killed in the line of duty

As they approached the apartment on Linwood Street, the officers were fired upon nearly immediately and they returned fire, city Police Chief John Plasse said. No extra info was instantly out there on the male officer who was killed.

Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators continue to investigate the death of Pitts and the suspect.

The officer, though rushed away from the site, succumbed to his wounds at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

It happened at the Garden Quarter Apartment Complex, on the southeast side of Terre Haute.

Sgt. Joe Watts, a public information officer for the state police, said in a tweet at 8:50 p.m. that a suspect remained barricaded in the apartment but a female who had also been inside was out.

Upon finding the man, police did call for a medic.

Adamson stated a suspect in that murder opened fireplace and killed the officer, who later died.

"When that call comes out, that's literally the worst call you can hear as a police officer is when a fellow officer, he or she is down, so that will draw out everybody", says Sgt. Joe Watts with ISP. "We are praying for his family, friends, colleagues, and community".

Terre Haute authorities said there will be an investigation into the shooting of the officer and the homicide suspect.

The death was the first in the line of duty for a Terre Haute police officer since July 11, 2011. That's when Officer Brent D. Lengthy was killed whereas serving an arrest warrant with a U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Job Power.
