Women Take To Cannes Red Carpet To Protest Inequality In Film

Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek and Marion Cotillard were among 82 women who made a symbolic walk up the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, in a demonstration of solidarity for women struggling for a voice in the movie industry.

Only 4.3 percent of competition films were directed by women over the course of the festival's first 71 years and only one female filmmaker has won the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or.

The march was planned by 5050 by 2020, a French movement dedicated to gender equality in film.

We will remind, cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart and Lea seydoux appeared in front of photographers in a stylish Trouser suits. Cate Blanchett is serving as President.

"Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of the industry says otherwise", Blanchett said. Since the launch of the Cannes Film Festival, only 82 films directed by women have been awarded by an official selection in competition, compared to 1,645 films directed by men, a ratio of less than five percent.

"We stand together on these steps today as a symbol of our determination and progress".

The protest was held ahead of the premiere of French filmmaker Eva Husson's "Girls of the Sun", which is about a Kurdish battalion of women soldiers.

After the Harvey Weinstein scandal ushered in the powerful #MeToo and #TimesUp movements in the industry, a handful of A-list actresses and directors are taking a step further by using one of the most prominent film festivals to fight for gender equity.

The other two - Nadine Labaki's "Capernaum", and Alice Rohrwacher's "Happy as Lazzaro" - are to premiere next week. Jane Campion is the only female film maker to ever win the Palme. Festival director Thierry Fremaux earlier this week hailed Saturday's event as a way for women "to affirm their presence".

After missing last year's Cannes Film Festival, Cheryl put her best foot forward on Friday (11 May) night, hitting the red carpet just hours after arriving in the town.
