Ireland made to wait for Test debut by day-one wash out

Fast bowler Boyd Rankin, who achieved his Test ambition for England in 2014 and returned to Ireland in 2016, is part of the golden generation of Irish cricketers who have been rewarded with places in the first Test squad.

William Porterfield will captain Ireland in its inaugural Test proud of the years of campaigning that have led to Friday's match against Pakistan here.

The country was awarded Test status by the International Cricket Council last June. "It's going to be a pretty special occasion for the 11 that are lucky enough to take the park tomorrow".

"We've mentioned it amongst the squad, it would be pretty remiss if we didn't talk about everything that's gone before us". However, last time, Bangladesh made their test debut in 2000. Australia is the only team who won their first match.

"Every one that's ever worn the jersey and done things behind the scenes and devoted their lives to it deserve a lot of credit for what's going to happen tomorrow".

The likely starting XI have played 1,103 first-class games, which is 304 more than the Pakistan line-up, although they do boost 226 more Test caps.

That would mean opener Imam, the nephew of selection chief and former Pakistan batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq, making his debut instead of Sami Aslam, who opened during Pakistan's drawn Test series in England two years ago.

Ireland was expected to enter the cricket ground in what would have deemed a historic moment in their cricketing history.

No longer just constrained to the one-day game however, Ireland's enthusiastic fans will at least get four more shots at enjoying Test cricket for the first time.

Ramsey recalled playing in the cricket street leagues in Donegal, a Gaelic football stronghold, and having to bow his head in team photos for fear the Gaelic Athletic Association, which until 1971 banned members from playing or attending so-called "foreign games", would forbid him from playing football.

"It is a big honour for me and my team to play this historic Test match".
