In yet another terrorist attack, a provincial government building in eastern Afghanistan suffered an attack on Sunday, which left at least nine people dead.

According to Khogyani, at least six ten people, including civilians, workers of the Customs Department, and security personnel lost their lives in the attack. Fourty-two people were also wounded.

He said there were at least two explosions followed by a gun battle that was still underway, adding that security forces have surrounded the building. It was the latest deadly violence to strike Afghanistan as militant groups step up attacks and US-backed Afghan forces intensify air strikes and ground offensives. He later said the heavily-armed attackers were also carrying grenades. Witnesses said the explosions had caused carnage among passers-by.

"A number of attackers had entered the building".

No one had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of filing this report. Both the Taliban and a local Islamic State affiliate have carried out numerous attacks in Nangarhar. Officials are concerned that a low voter turnout will undermine the credibility of the poll.

Operation Al Khandaq will target United States forces and "their intelligence agents" as well as their "internal supporters", a Taliban statement said in late April. Most have been in the capital Kabul.

Ever since 2014, when the USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat role in the country, Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the Taliban and ISIS.
