Salma Hayek Calls For Reparations For Actresses Who Have Been Underpaid

Salma Hayek has said that the reason Harvey Weinstein denied her and Lupita Nyong'o's sexual harassment claims is because they're women of colour. "I can't find enough female writers and directors", Hayek said.

"Change has already happened" in Hollywood, Hayek said, so the time has come for women in the industry to build on that momentum through their film work.

Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek and Marion Cotillard were among 82 women who made a symbolic walk up the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, in a demonstration of solidarity for women struggling for a voice in the movie industry.

The gender pay gap, however, will take far longer to close, Hayek said.

The Mexican-born star subsequently claimed that one way to achieve equality would be for actors to spurn "inflated fees".

"Ask what women are paid, and say, 'If she's not paid the same as the men, I'm not doing it'".

Hayek, a prominent leader in Hollywood's Time's Up movement, was among 82 women - symbolizing the mere 82 female-directed films to have screened at Cannes, compared to 1,866 films directed by men - who protested the festival's gender inequality the previous day. But she also had a warning for these women: "they still want to pay you the exploitative salary they paid you before".

"A lot of attractive, peaceful men have been the victims of the bullying of men", she declared, saying it was "an exciting time" for men in Hollywood. "It worked. And I think we should enjoy it".

"We should have been angrier sooner", she said.

Hayek wrote an essay in The New York Times in December that accused Weinstein of sexual harassment during the making of the film "Frida".

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Hayek argued that Weinstein singled out Nyong'o and herself because they are women of colour, while most of the accusers were not. "So he went back, attacking the two women of color, in hopes that if he could discredit us". "Because men have the opportunity to rethink what it means to be a man, and this comes with a lot of freedom".
