Indonesia police shoot dead four men after attack on Riau HQ

Metro TV reported that after the white minivan crashed into the entrance gate, three men armed with swords jumped out and started attacking several police officers.

In addition to the two injured cops, one police officer killed after getting hit by suspected terrorists' auto, one journalist injured, four perpetrators killed while at least one is on the run.

Police said the men belonged to a local extremist group, but not Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which authorities believe was behind the family suicide bombings.

Earlier, an internal police report said one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

Police arrested at least one man, while four others fled the scene.

This was the second attack on a police premise in the country since Monday.

Indonesia - which is set to host the Asian Games in just three months and an IMF-World Bank meeting in Bali in October - has long struggled with Islamist militancy, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed over 200 people in the country's worst-ever terror attack.

Indonesia is still reeling from the shock of a series of suicide bombings in recent days.

Doddy said the police shot and killed both perpetrators.

The suicide bombings, involving families with young children, and an explosion at an apartment where militants were suspected to have been constructing bombs have left around 30 people dead, including 13 suspected perpetrators, police said.

In a message carried on its Amaq news agency, Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Surabaya.

"They had the same teacher and they regularly met for Koran recital every week", said East Java police chief Machfud Arifin.

They followed a deadly prison riot staged by Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week.
