Belgium suffer Kompany blow in draw with Portugal

Kompany pulled up with a groin injury in the Red Devils' warm-up game in a goalless draw against Portugal at the VTM Stadion in Brussels on Saturday.

Martinez said he wanted to used the rules to his advantage regarding his skipper.

Roberto Martinez's side trudged off at full time to the sound of whistles from their own supporters, with the former Everton and Wigan Athletic manager set to name his final 23-man squad within the next 24 hours.

The pair play on the left and right of the back three respectively with Vincent Kompany between them, although Kompany had to come off injured last night and was replaced by Dedryck Boyata.

Belgium are in Group G at the World Cup, where they will also face England and Tunisia. He performed in a fantastic manner when he was on the pitch.

Martinez noted initial scans of previous Kompany injuries had not necessarily provided a true picture, and that "something that could be shorter is a lot longer, and could be the other way round".

Cape Town - Roberto Martinez has named a star-studded 23-man Belgium squad ahead of the 2018 Soccer World Cup in Russian Federation with defender Vincent Kompany included despite suffering a groin injury.

Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels, Watford's Christian Kabasele and fellow defender Jordan Lukaku of Lazio are the other players to miss out, while Los Angeles FC defender Laurent Ciman is on standby.

"I told him, he's done everything he could have done in the camp", Martinez said of the decision to leave Benteke out.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes there are four front-runners to win the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer. "His performance against Portugal showed he's in a good moment".
