Dutch Queen Maxima's sister Ines Zorreguieta dies in Argentina

"It is presumed that it was a suicide", a spokesman of the Dutch government told Argentinian newspaper La Nacion of the 33-year-old's death.

Her relatives quickly arrived on the scene and it's believed Queen Maxima will travel to her homeland in the coming hours, according to Hello! magazine.

Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that the sister of the Argentinian-born queen likely committed suicide, citing a government spokesperson.

She was the godmother to Queen Maxima's youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

The Queen, originally from Argentina, was said by the royal household to be "very shocked and very sad".

Inés Zorreguieta was found dead in her apartment in Buenos Aires yesterday night.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte wished the Queen and her family, "all the strength needed to carry this very bad loss".

She became involved in coordinating the social policy of the Argentine president Macri, but lacked the right training and work experience.

Reports say that Zorreguieta suffered from depression and mental health issues. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Queen and her family.

Between 2009 and 2011 she worked at the United Nations headquarters of Panama but returned to Argentina in 2012 after a breakup.

She, her husband and their three children last flew to Argentina in 2017 for the funeral of her and Ms Zorreguieta's father, who died from cancer at 89.

Jorge Zorreguieta worked as agriculture minister during Argentina's brutal military dictatorship.

Queen Maxima is the wife of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who ascended to the throne in 2013.
