Trump commutes term of Kardashian-championed drug offender

Alice Marie Johnson has been reunited with her family after spending 21 years in prison for a non-violent drug offense, the only of which she had ever committed. On Wednesday, West got to deliver the news to Johnson that she would be freed. "Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates", the White House said in a statement announcing the commutation of her sentence.

The two met last Wednesday, alongside Jared Kushner, and discussed whether Ms. Johnson should be released and if she has paid her debt to society.

"I had no idea that I was even facing a sentence like that because truly I felt that people who got life without parole had committed the most heinous crimes".

The great-grandmother and her many loved ones - including her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren - gathered around a table at The Hub in Memphis, Tenn., for a family dinner 25 years in the making.

BREAKING: President Trump has granted clemency to #AliceMarieJohnson after meeting with @KimKardashian West to talk about her case last week.

Administration officials say the president is not only contemplating possible pardons - which wipes out a conviction - but also commutations, which leave the conviction intact and on the person's record while reducing the punishment.

Johnson's case was first noticed by Kardashian West when she saw a video about it on social media and chose to pay for a new legal team to fight the sentence. She was tried on charges of cocaine conspiracy and money-laundering charges.

"It is an incredible feeling", Johnson told Baldwin of no longer being behind bars.

It was a sweet ending to the mission Kardashian said she joined after seeing a story about Johnson's case on her Twitter feed about seven months ago.

"I'm feeling no handcuffs on me. Without her, I would still be in Aliceville", Johnson said. Why Kardashian advocated for Alice Johnson during her visit with President Trump and what you need to know about prison reform.

Kardashian then tweeted, "The phone call I just had with Alice will forever be one of my best memories".

On her first full day of freedom, she gave thanks for her second chance, and the man who granted it.

"I believe because I'm recognized now and my case is magnified through media, it has caught the attention of others", Johnson said.
