Rohrer had been with the department for seven years and King for 13 years. He and Theresa "TK" King were overcome by the suspect inside a gated area, police said. The suspect had been recently accused of murdering a 55-year-old woman.

A candlelight vigil for the deputies was set to be held at 8pm on Sunday, in front of city hall. King had three children and Rohrer had two, Wyandotte County sheriff's Maj. Kelli Bailiff said at a news conference.

Two inmates were being transported from the Wyandotte County Correctional and Court Services Building on 7th Street.

Zeigler said authorities were withholding the inmate's name until he had been formally charged, which is expected to happen next week.

Zeigler also said the deputies were taking the inmate from the courthouse back to jail, not the other way around, as police initially reported.

The Fraternal Order of Police in Kansas City, Kansas, said in a statement: 'We are praying for our friends at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Officer, their families, friends and our entire blue family.

The Olathe Police Department, Raymore Police Department in Missouri and the Jackson County Sheriff's Officer in Missouri tweeted similar heartfelt messages.

"The protocol has been in place for a long time and from what I observed and from what I believe the investigation will show is they followed proper procedure", she said of the deputies. They also said it was too early in the investigation to give specific details of how the shootings could have happened.

According to Fox News, 44-year-old Theresa King and 35-year-old Patrick Rohrer were shot, possibly with their own weapons, as they drove the suspect to court.

Koelsch says the Lyon County Sheriff's Office studies violent incidents against law enforcement nationwide so staffers can stay as safe as possible.

Authorities have identified the Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy who died Friday after he and another deputy were shot while transporting an inmate.
