Kroll goes on to pull out a word that Sanford used previously during the interview to describe the Trump movement, which he says is "metastasizing".

"The issue is - do we want to have litmus tests and allegiance tests in running for office?"

Some Republicans rushed to Sanford's defence after Trump's bruising intervention. When he did not receive an invitation to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, he is said to have made his displeasure widely known ... thus infuriating the president. Virginia also controversially nominated Republican Corey Stewart, who was seen with White Nationalists, as a Senate candidate to take on Sen.

Nationwide, Democrats are hopeful a "blue wave" of Democratic challengers can upend Republican incumbents in November.

Trump's post was made less than three hours before polls closed.

Real estate investor Danny Tarkanian, whose father Jerry coached a legendary University of Las Vegas basketball team, was given a sixth shot at elected office by Republicans in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District.

ME is the first state in the nation to try Instant Runoff Voting, a style of voting passed in 2016 that allows voters to rank their candidates in preference from first to last.

Under the system, used now in a few local jurisdictions, the election is over if one candidate wins a majority. Last-place candidates will be eliminated and votes reallocated until there is a victor, a process that may take more than a week. Maine Governor Paul LePage is reportedly considering not certifying the results.
