Texas Border Patrol Chase Ends In Crash, Killing At Least 5 Immigrants

Four people were pronounced dead at the scene while a fifth died at a hospital.

Four victims were dead at the scene, Boyd said.

This article be updated as more details become available. The driver was not seriously injured and taken into Homeland Security custody, Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd told reporters.

There were 14 people in the vehicle.

While traveling at top speed, the driver lost control of the SUV, which rolled, causing the deaths and injuries, the Texas Department of Public Safety was quoted as saying.

The sheriff confirmed to local news outlets that the vehicle flipped and ejected several people at end of a high-speed auto chase with U.S. Border Patrol agents. "We've seen this many, many times".

Most of the occupants were believed to be living in the USA without legal permission.

The driver, a suspected smuggler and also believed to be a US citizen, survived the crash, according to NBC News.

This SUV was packed with undocumented immigrants as it crashed trying to escape border patrol. Of those five included the driver, who is reportedly a United States citizen.

He added: 'This is a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure'.

Boyd said his officers have dealt with the driver before, adding he was scouting the area earlier to try and pick up immigrants.

The deaths come amid heightened tension over immigration policy at the US-Mexico border, after the Trump administration began forced separations of migrant children from their parents.

The other 12 passengers were undocumented immigrants, Boyd said.
