New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern introduces Daughter to the World

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her partner, Clarke Gayford, have revealed the name of their daughter, born June 21.

Ardern on Thursday became just the second elected world leader to give birth while holding office.

Mr Gayford, known in New Zealand as the "first bloke", is the presenter of a fishing show, and Ms Ardern was the youngest New Zealand PM in 150 years, but she said they would not put pressure on their new baby.

The "Ardern" would serve as another middle name, meaning the baby is known as "Neve Gayford", she added.

Ardern said that while she is on leave, she would be finding her way as a new parent.

"Also it means, in various forms, bright and radiant and snow, which seemed like a good combination for Matariki (Maori new year) and for solstice".

Pausing and looking to the ceiling of Auckland City Hospital, the Prime Minister said the moment was a blur of emotion.

"It's also the place where all my family are from as well as a place name and I grew up under that mountain".

We all divide our time, choose between ambitions and obligations, creative joys, family-time and workplace climbs.

Jacinda Ardern is New Zealand's first leader to give birth while in power.Ardern insists it will be business as usual during her six weeks off. "And when we met her, we thought she looked like she suited the name".

"We've gone for simplicity, because Clarke with an "e" has caused all sorts of problems, and Jacinda with a "d", she said.

"Welcome to our village wee one", Ardern wrote in the caption.

"Clark's been as much of a role model here as I am and that's been something that I've heard a lot of people talk about, too - and it's true".

"Hopefully, these things said in these moments now, I guess for want of a better word - novelty, they are still new - that one day they aren't new anymore", she said.

At almost three days old the tiny tot will make her first public appearance at 11am cradled in mother Jacinda Ardern's arms with proud dad Clarke Gayford.

A later post thanked her midwife for providing her with a meal of macaroni and cheese.

On Thursday, Ardern became just the second elected world leader to give birth while holding office. It marked the first victory for the Labour Party in nine years.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has stepped in as acting PM and will run the country for the next six weeks while Ardern takes maternity leave, according to an agreement they published earlier.
