Fresh safety calls after tanker blast kills 9 in Lagos

Nigerian officials say nine people are dead after an oil-carrying tanker truck crashed and burst into flames on a bridge in Lagos. "I tried maneuvering my vehicle to avoid been burnt but my efforts proved abortive".

Buhari added that the priority now is to save those people who could still be in danger.

LEADERSHIP observed that about 53 vehicles were burnt during the sad incident, causing traffic gridlock that left commuters stranded along the expressway.

A fresh accident has occurred along the Otedola Bridge axis of Berger in Lagos, barely 24 hours after a tanker exploded around the same spot on Thursday.

"I pray to God to give the victims' families the fortitude to bear the loss", Obasa said in a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Musbau Rasak. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of pain and grief. Government spokesman Kehinde Bamigbetan said it was time "to find ways of ensuring that tankers are driven by drivers who have more responsibility".

A Joint rescue operation involving FRSC, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), police Nigeria Security and CIvil Defence Corps, Lagos State Fire service, LASTMA rushed to the scene of the incident minutes after it happened. He also urged motorists to continue to adhere to the safety standard and the State Traffic Laws so as to prevent a re-occurrence of such incidents.

The tanker, five buses, two trucks, a tricycle and 45 cars got burnt. The accident was the result of a brake failure, said the Federal Road Safety Commission spokesperson Bisi Kazeem.
