Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Victory Is a Canary in the Dems' Coal Mine

Trevor Noah, host of "The Daily Show", couldn't contain his excitement Wednesday about the U.S.' Democratic Party primary victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York's 14th Congressional District.

Mr. Crowley has been an outsized personality on Capitol Hill and was seen as a contender to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader of the House Democrats. "Democratic Party is a big tent kind of party", she said. The veteran Democrat was beaten soundly by fresh-faced 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialist. " Throughout the primary, she artfully mixed democratic demands for national and working class representation with a constant trumpeting of her democratic socialist platform".

"They made a choice in one district", she said.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez, a former Bernie Sanders volunteer from a Puerto Rican family, won with a 57.5% majority. She says she's always challenged. When she was nominated for Attorney General, our warnings that she was soft on corruption were ignored, including by Republican Senators like Orrin Hatch (R-UT) who praised Lynch and voted for her nomination in 2015.

At this point, the 14th District-which spans from the southeastern and eastern portion of the Bronx to part of north-central Queens-is half Latino, 16 percent Asian, and 12 percent Black, but only 18 percent white, making it thoroughly ripe for nationally oppressed representation.

She led a boldly progressive campaign, supporting universal healthcare, tuition-free college and criminal justice reform. Bernie Sanders during his run for the 2016 presidential primary.

"I think I was primarily compelled on moral grounds, because I could only imagine if 60 people were shot and killed in Ferguson or if 60 people were shot and killed in the West Virginia teacher strikes", Ocasio-Cortez said. But as national media line up behind the attractive and articulate Ocasio-Cortez, and her social-media following explodes as it has done since her victory, tempering the radical Occupy remnants is going to become more hard.

"The differences on policy were minimal", said Huffman, a liberal environmentalist who considered Crowley, a senior figure in the House Democratic caucus, "a really great person and a good colleague".

CNN's Erin Burnett played that clip of Pelosi for Ocasio-Cortez during their interview. That has put him in the line of fire from Capitol Hill, as Politico reported in early June: "Rep. David Price (D-N.C.), executive director of the early-1980s Hunt Commission, which created superdelegates, said lawmakers were "infuriated" by Perez's stance, although he's not sure there's anything that can be done". "To that extent I think it represents something that we should benefit from as we move into the midterms, that there's a lot of energy out there that some of our fresh new faces will be able to tap into and take over some seats that we might not have otherwise have been able to take back". "It is not to be viewed as something that stands for anything else", she added.

Crowley skipped two debates with Ocasio-Cortez, fueling criticism that he was an out-of-touch insider.

Yet Mr Crowley's loss suggests Democrats must overcome intra-party divisions if they hope to take control of Congress and key governors' offices nationwide.
