Seven-times champion Serena Williams moved up a gear at Wimbledon to beat Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova 6-1 6-4 on Wednesday and reach the third round.

United States player Serena Williams (R) shakes hands after winning against Bulgaria´s Viktoriya Tomova during their women´s singles second round match on the third day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club on July 4, 2018.

The last time Federer turned up to defend his crown, in 2013, he suffered a shock second-round humbling by Sergiy Stakhovsky. She said she'd heard that nursing would promote weight loss, but that didn't happen for her.

The 17th-seeded Pouille saved two match points in the third-set tiebreaker before eventually forcing a fifth set, but Novak regrouped to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

"I played very well again, I felt good out there, less nerves than in the first round, which is normal", Federer said, after racking up his 93rd Wimbledon win.

The 36-year-old destroyed Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-4 6-1 in 90 minutes on Centre Court.

After holding her first service game, Tomova would not win another until the second set as Williams powered through five games in succession to take the opener.

"Also the grass helps me just a little bit to get a few more free points than what it would on some other surfaces".

Five of the top 10 women's seeds have now failed to go beyond the second round at Wimbledon.

Gael Monfils overcame Paolo Lorenzi 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) to set up a third-round meeting with 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist Querrey. "I spent all morning with her", Williams said.

Two straightforward, straight-sets victories sets up her third round contest with World No. 120, Rodina. I think I have good balance. I was not feeling my rhythm from the beginning.

"But I told myself "no, you are not going to lose this match".
