Mbappe told France Football when asked to pick out the likely winners: "For the favorites, I will say Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Raphael Varane. and me".

The 19-year-old, who scored four goals and was voted young player of the competition in Russian Federation, hurt three vertebrae in his back when picking his things up to go for a shower and told France Football that it was of great importance that the French squad hid the problem from their opponents to avoid further injury.

At the World Cup Ronaldo scored four goals but they came in just two matches as Portugal were knocked out in the last 16.

Ronaldo is the two-time victor of the accolade, which is a revival of the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

In Spain, the 33-year-old met his biggest footballing rival in Messi, with whom he regularly challenged for domestic awards and trophies, as well as many individual accolades.

Belgian duo Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne have also made the cut after an impressive World Cup and in De Bruyne's case, a quite incredible league campaign with Manchester City.

Croatia's World Cup Golden Ball victor Luka Modric was also named, as was England's Golden Boot victor Harry Kane.

The winners announced in London on September 24 are voted by national coaches and captains, plus media from Fifa's 211 member countries, and fans voting online. Guardiola won the 2011 award when coaching Barcelona.

He enjoyed club success with Real Madrid, helping the team to a third successive Champions League title in May.

Lyon boss Reynald Pedros is one of 10 nominees for the best women's coach.
