Putin invites Trump to Moscow for second meeting after Washington postponed plans

Putin invites Trump to Moscow for second meeting after Washington postponed plans

Putin had said earlier Friday during a meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, that he was ready to invite Trump and also ready to visit Washington if conditions are right.

"There are concerns, as I expressed, after Helsinki of an inconsistent public posture as to Russia", Portman admitted, referring to Trump's controversial press conference alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland.

Alina Polyakova, a Russian Federation expert at the Brookings Institution, said hosting Trump in Moscow gives Putin the home court advantage.

And Trump counsellor Kellyanne Conway said the incident showed the need broadly for more "civility" between reporters and the White House.

Putin should have given Trump the chance to tell USA media that he had extracted concessions from him in a "giveaway game", staying focused on the longer-term goal of stabilising ties between Moscow and Washington, Markov said on his Facebook page. "Be my guest. He has such an invitation, I told him that".

Just two days earlier, politicians from both sides unsuccessfully demanded details of the Helsinki meeting from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who stonewalled almost all those inquiries at a contentious hearing by maintaining that the president has a right to private conversations.

"I think we've lost track of the fact that the Russians were trying to interfere in our election and to sew chaos into our democracy, and every single day I see a growing chaos in our democracy, just in the constant accusations back and forth", Lankford said. It was also a point of contention given that Mr. Trump at the news conference appeared to say he didn't see how it could have been Russian Federation that meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

The White House's reaction was roundly criticized from the likes of CNN, Fox News, and the White House Correspondents' Association. He says she refused to do that and stayed "despite staff, Secret Service, everyone trying to usher everyone out of the room".

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) also encouraged Trump to continue pushing for a better relationship with Putin and Russian Federation at large.

The White House on Wednesday postponed that invitation until next year, when a federal investigation of Russian election interference could be finished.

"That makes me an enemy of the state", Roberts said. The White House clarified his comments by saying he respects the Fed's independence.

Trump defended his conduct at the summit and the White House said no agreements were reached at the one-on-one meeting other than having national security teams meet.

The meeting between Natalia Veselnitskaya, Donald Trump Jr and a number of Trump associates was allegedly set up to hand over compromising information on the opposing Clinton campaign.

"In Washington, Trump would be surrounded by more aides, media, and the entire policy audience".

By saying that he is willing to go to Washington if conditions are "appropriate", Mr Putin underlines that stance and effectively puts pressure on Mr Trump to try to stamp out opposition.

President Trump has repeatedly sought official retaliation against journalists over how they question him, according to current and former administration sources who spoke with the Washington Post. "And he is open to visiting Moscow upon receiving a formal invitation".
