Police officer fatally shoots homeowner who killed intruder, authorities say

The unidentified man was killed by the Aurora Police Department (APD) after he shot an intruder in his home.

Metz said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about a disturbance in the area of North Iola Street and East Montview Boulevard around that time.

When police pulled up to the house, officers heard gunshots coming from inside and rushed in, where they saw a man with a gun.

The man, later determined to be the homeowner, was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds.

Then they found an intruder dead on the man's bathroom floor, and determined that he had been killed by the homeowner.

A child also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries at the hands of the intruder, but police did not release additional details, citing an ongoing investigation. Officers say the armed resident fatally shot him.

Police say they arrived at the Aurora, CO, home around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning on reports that a man had broken inside.

"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", Chief Metz said, adding that the department is providing assistance to the family of the deceased resident. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said.

Aurora is a suburb of Denver.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative reassignment, per department policy, the Post said.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office said the facts of the investigation would be presented to the Office of the District Attorney for a determination of whether criminal charges should be filed against any involved person.

The identity of the resident, intruder and officer have not yet been released.

The shooting marked the second deadly encounter involving Aurora police in three days.
