But it is the suggestion that Kohli may have sworn in Root's direction that could land the India skipper in trouble with match referee Jeff Crowe, the former New Zealand captain.

They then fought back through Curran and Ben Stokes, but it could have been even better.

Kohli had scored two hundreds in the game at Adelaide in December 2014 but lack of support led to India losing the game by 48 runs. He was dropped by Dawid Malan at first slip on 21, edged three times short of fielders behind the wicket, then glanced another edge through the right hand of the diving Malan when on 51.

Kohli was finally dismissed by Adil Rashid, with his 149 coming off 225 balls with 22 fours and one six.

Kohli swooped on the ball and beat Root's dive at the non-striker's end with a pinpoint shy, before mimicking Root's own actions in the decisive ODI at Headingley last month, when he marked his series-winning century with a rapper-style "mic-drop" of his bat.

India players celebrate the wicket of England's Alastair Cook at Edgbaston on Thursday.

The effort was just 13 shy of England's 287 in the first innings. A score of 54 for 2 - at which point Kohli had walked in - had become 100 for 5.

Kohli not only surpassed his previous best score of 41 in England but also went ahead to notch his 17th Test fifty off 100 balls before Pandya departed after being trapped in front by Curran.

When India reached Mumbai for the fourth Test of the five-match series, they were already 2-0 up and skipper Virat Kohli was in tremendous form.

Ashwin went round the wicket and Root flicked the ball off his hips for Rahul to take another excellent catch at leg-slip. He still struggled to read which way Anderson was swinging the ball and the pace bowler found the edge of his bat four times.

Jos Buttler, meanwhile, was back at the ground after the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that he had gone to hospital during the lunch interval to have an X-ray on his left middle finger.

Such was the dominance of the 29-year-old captain, the next top scorer for India was opener Shikhar Dhawan with 26.

Stokes, introduced after lunch, showed why he is such an important part of this England side with an aggressive spell.
