‘No Collusion!’ ‘NO COLLUSION!’ Well, Except Maybe For That Trump Tower Collusion

One part of Mueller's inquiry and congressional investigations has focused on a meeting months before the November election in Trump Tower in NY between Russian officials, Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, and other campaign aides.

The Latest on President Donald Trump and his comments about a meeting campaign officials and Russians at Trump Tower.

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics", the president said.

"Sir, I was a lawyer for the Obama campaign, transition and White House", Eisen wrote in response to Trump's early Sunday tweet.

If U.S. President Donald Trump is subpoenaed by a special counsel investigating contacts between the 2016 Trump election campaign and Russian Federation, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court, one of Trump's lawyers said on Sunday.

Trump was apparently responding to reporting from The Washington Post and other outlets that the president has been increasingly brooding in private about the Mueller probe, particularly as it relates to his son's possible entanglement in the investigation.

A statement released in July 2017 reportedly penned by Donald Trump Jr. was later revealed to have been dictated by his father, leading to further investigation of the meeting, and opening up further questions in impropriety on behalf of the Trump campaign and Donald Trump himself.

The revelation that the Trump Tower meeting was called to transmit damaging information on Clinton is not a new one.

"I make this joke that ... no matter what the legal team recommends, if we recommend that the president were to give the interview, which I think the inclination is not at this point ... you're going to get 12 lawyers on there saying I can't believe that Sekulow and Giuliani and all the other lawyers allowed the president to do it", Sekulow said.

It was later reported that was false and the president was involved in constructing his son's misleading statement.

He reiterated that he had no prior knowledge of the 20-minute meeting when it happened, adding that "it went nowhere".

Political campaigns routinely pursue opposition research on their opponents, but not with foreign representatives from a country viewed as an adversary.

Why is the Trump Tower meeting controversial?

What did President Trump say? Trump seems to be arguing against his own point by assuring us that he had nothing to do with this meeting, which - oh, by the way - was totally on the up-and-up.

'I don't represent Don Jr., but I will tell you I have no knowledge at all of Don Jr. being told that he's a target of any investigation, and I have no knowledge of him being interviewed by the special counsel, ' he said.

In addition to weighing in publicly on the Trump Tower meeting, the president also unleashed angry tweets directed at the news media Sunday morning from his 11-day working vacation in Bedminster, New Jersey.

U.S. President Donald Trump holds a Make America Great Again rally in Olentangy Orange High School in Lewis Center, OH, U.S., August 4, 2018. He said he was not aware of Trump Jr. facing any legal exposure.

Trump's team is trying to limit the scope of questions Mueller's team can ask of the president.

In another, he expressed frustration with both the media and Mueller's probe. Trump has seethed against what he feels are trumped-up charges against his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, whose trial began last week and provided a visible reminder of Mueller's work.
