Chicago seeks help after deadly weekend of shootings

McCarthy was responding to earlier tweets by Giuliani in which he blamed a wave of deadly shootings in Chicago over the weekend on what he called decades of "one party Democratic rule". More than 1,700 people have been shot in Chicago this year.

Federal authorities have increased their efforts in the city, creating a special task force in cooperation with local police to target those who repeatedly commit gun crimes.

Of the wounded who reported an age, the oldest victim was 62 and the youngest was 11, CNN reported. At least 11 people have died as a result. No arrests have yet been made.

"Somebody knows who did it". They hold the mayor accountable.

Of the Chicago City Council's 50 aldermen, 48 are Democrats, one is Republican, and one is Independent.

"I never hear people saying, 'These individuals out here in the streets need to stop pulling the trigger.' I never hear that. They get a pass from everybody, and they shouldn't'".

Johnson said witnesses who come forward would be given protection. We are all supposed to be on the same side.

Police said in some of the incidents shooters sprayed bullets indiscriminately into large groups in rival territories, where people had gathered for outdoor events.

McCarthy announced this year that he plans to run for mayor next February against Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who fired McCarthy in 2015 after the release of dashcam video showing a white police officer shoot a black teenager 16 times.

"We as a city, in every corner, have an accountability and a responsibility".

Mayor Rahm Emanuel asked residents to report those they believe were responsible for the weekend shootings.

Experts say crime tends to pick up during the hot summer months, but Emanuel dismissed that. "There are too many guns on the street, too many people with criminal records on the street, and there is a shortage of values about what is right and what is wrong", he added.

"Being mayor is about laying out a positive vision for our city and our future", Emanuel campaign spokeswoman Caron Brookens said in a statement. The toll ranks as the worst weekend of 2018, both in terms of deaths and total shot.

The most recent non-fatal shooting left a 40-year-old man wounded at 11:27 p.m.in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side.

"The city of Chicago experienced a violent night", Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday afternoon.

Before the particularly violent Sunday, there were six shootings, none fatal, on Friday, and 15 shootings, one fatal, on Saturday.

Before the weekend, the city's homicides were down 23 percent compared to the same point a year ago and shootings were down 19 percent.

Police said the shootings were gang related.
