Wake Forest University basketball coach charged in death of NYC tourist

Former UCF assistant coach Jamil Jones was arrested and charged with assault after punching a man in New York City who later died.

Jones turned himself over to police on Thursday and has since faced court charged with assault.

The New York Post cited law enforcement sources in reporting that a local resident confronted Szabo about the noise he was making, and that Szabo hit that person in the face.

Jones was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court October 2.

Per the New York Post, the medical examiner has yet to determine if the punch allegedly thrown by Jones led to Szabo's death, and the charges against him could change. They say the punch caused Szabo to fall and hit his head on a sidewalk. According to multiple reports, Szabo knocked on multiple vehicle windows while looking for an Uber.

Jones allegedly punched Sabor Szabo in the face at 1:15 a.m. ET on Sunday morning after a confrontation.

Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning said at the time that Jones was a "well-respected bright mind" in the coaching world and brought "new blood" and "new perspectives" to Wake Forest.

"The court made the proper ruling with the charges, and the District Attorney's office made the proper ruling with the charges", the lawyer, Alain Massena, said.

Detectives told ABC New York station WABC-TV that Szabo had just left a family wedding, possibly while intoxicated, and was walking around banging on cars until he then pounded on Jones' SUV.

Jones is set to begin his second season on Danny Manning's Wake Forest staff after joining in the spring of 2017.
