Extremely poor air condition in Calgary because of wildfire smoke

Air pollution is increasing in Snohomish, King, Pierce and Kitsap counties due to wildfire smoke and may cause health problems.

Several agencies in Puget Sound say air quality was at unhealthy levels for children, the elderly and other sensitive groups Tuesday. Smoke from British Columbia and fires in the Cascades continues to build in the Puget Sound region Monday.

New West, on the heels of the fallout from Friday's Fraser River barge fire, had briefly seen a clearing of the air thanks to clean marine air that swept through the region. Last summer's wildfire season holds the record for second worst.

Air quality remains unhealthy throughout Washington state (aside from some coastal communities). Exposure is a particular concern for infants, older adults and those with diabetes or heart and lung disease. Opening windows in your home may simply let in more polluted air.

Avoid driving, when possible. Using an air conditioner that cools and filters air may help.

Schools and daycare providers should consider postponing outdoor activities or moving them indoors.

With air now rated as unhealthy, even healthy people may have symptoms such as dry eyes, coughing and sinus irritation. These masks are usually available at hardware and home fix stores. Please check with your doctor to see if this appropriate for you.

"We are expecting the smoke we're seeing right now in Western Washington to start to move out (Tuesday night) into (Wednesday)".

"During a wildfire, smoke conditions can change quickly over short distances and can vary considerably hour-by-hour", said Environment Canada in a statement.

The air quality in town has improved marginally from yesterday-instead of being unhealthy for everybody, it's now just "unhealthy for sensitive groups", according to the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), though the air around the airport is still just as bad as yesterday.
