Ron DeSantis says vote for black opponent would 'monkey this up'

I'd say that's pretty good work for a year and a half.

The monkey line is just straight up racist. Sometimes Democrats have, too.

American Bridge, closely associated with the Democratic Party and heavily funded by NY billionaire George Soros, contends in a news release that the ad is part of a campaign aimed at painting DeSantis as someone focused on appeasing Trump, "not helping Florida families".

Gillum, who defeated former Rep. Gwen Graham and two other candidates, would be Florida's first black governor if elected in November.

Stephen Lawson, a DeSantis spokesman, later said that such characterizations were "absurd".

"It's disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles", said Terrie Rizzo, head of the Florida Democratic Party.

The race for governor will be closely watched as an indicator ahead of 2020, when Mr Trump could be seeking re-election against a liberal Democratic candidate.

Trump surprised Florida Republicans late a year ago with his endorsement of DeSantis, and frequently tweeted about the lawmaker, one of his staunchest supporters in Washington. "The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases bankrupting the state". They also are among the most ardent Trump defenders, something DeSantis does frequently on Fox News.

U.S. Senate candidate and U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., speaks to supporters after her primary election victory, Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, in Tempe, Ariz.

Trump backed McSally on Twitter early Wednesday morning.

Putnam had always been considered the favorite to win the GOP primary with state party backing and big donations from the biggest corporate entities in the state, including supermarket chain Publix, U.S. Sugar, Florida Power & Light and Disney. She is Strong on Crime, the Border and our under siege 2nd Amendment. Has my total and complete Endorsement!

Ms McSally, who will be contesting a seat left by retiring Republican Senator Jeff Flake, pitched into her November rival straight away, signalling a bruising fight ahead as Republicans take on a Democrat Party determined to finally flip the state on the back of an energised base.

"Even in the most favorable light, it was stupid and callous and showed a level of historic ignorance", Jolly told MSNBC host Ali Velshi, who was filling in for Brian Williams.

Switching gears to Arizona's gubernatorial race - incumbent Governor Doug Ducey secured his position in the Republican primary, defeating Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett. Florida's registered Republicans are 83 percent white.

Now McSally will face Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, a fellow US representative who easily won her primary, in the race to fill the seat being vacated by Senator Jeff Flake.
