Mike Huckabee: Sessions Needs to Take Control of Russia Probe or Resign

Trump has recently begun targeting Ohr, urging that he be removed from the Justice Department.

That's what lawmakers were told this week by a senior Justice Department lawyer during a private interview.

The aide, who wasn't authorized to discuss the committee's confidential work and spoke on condition of anonymity, said it would be a violation of committee rules for the Judiciary or Oversight committee Republicans to have used any material shared with the House intelligence committee without such a vote. Ohr's wife, Nellie, was also a contractor for Fusion GPS.

In questioning Ohr, lawmakers Elijah Cummings and Jerrold Nadler said, Republicans were selective about his communications with Steele to create "a highly misleading narrative with factually inaccurate interpretations and conjecture" that they were discussing Trump.

It was unclear from Ohr's interview with lawmakers whether Steele had been directly told that or had picked up the information through his contacts.

The newspaper added that the effort did not seem to have had any successes; Deripaska told U.S. investigators he disagreed with them on Russian organized crime and ideas about possible Russian collusion with the Trump campaign, a person familiar with the exchanges told the Times.

Steele and Ohr, at the time of the 2016 presidential election a senior official in the deputy attorney general's office, had first met a decade earlier and developed a rapport over a shared interest in global organized crime.

Republicans have charged that the Steele dossier, which contains some salacious and unverified intelligence on Trump and Russian Federation, was inappropriately used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Ohr and his wife made national headlines earlier this year when it was revealed the couple had strong ties to "Trump Dossier" author Christopher Steele and shady opposition firm Fusion GPS.

Ohr still remains at the Justice Department despite this.

Trump and some of his supporters in Congress have also accused the FBI of launching the entire Russian Federation counterintelligence investigation based on the dossier.
