Ducey appoints Kyl to succeed McCain

Former Republican Sen. Jon Kyl has been tapped to replace the late Sen. "Jon Kyl", said Ducey.

The Republican lawyer-turned-lobbyist was tapped in July to help guide Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh through the confirmation process in a role informally called sherpa.

Arizona law requires the governor to select a successor from the same party as the senator who vacated the seat - meaning this seat was always going to remain in Republican hands until 2020, when a special election will be held coinciding with the regularly scheduled statewide election.

If Kyl does leave the Senate after the end of the current congressional term next January 3, Arizona's governor can appoint another senator for the remaining year.

"I'm willing to serve certainly through the end of this session, at least to make sure the business that is now ongoing is taken care of, but I don't want to make a commitment beyond that", Mr. Kyl said.

Petraeus said McCain was a man of "great courage, unshakable determination, and unwavering devotion to our country and those who defend it", according to remarks released by the family.

Gov. Doug Ducey made the announcement on Twitter minutes before a scheduled news conference.

Kyl's entire career in Washington overlapped with McCain's and he served with the state's senior senator for three terms before stepping down.

Even George Bush had a little barb for Trump, as he invoked the spirit of John McCain whispering "we are better than this, America is better than this".

Pallbearers included USA defense secretary James Mattis; rear admiral and former naval academy superintendent Thomas Lynch; Admiral John Richardson; and two men - Everett Alvarez Jr. and Jon Fer - who were prisoners of war in Vietnam along with McCain. In 2010, Time magazine chose Kyl as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. John McCain's seat in the upper chamber, The Arizona Republic reports. "I do know I will not seek this seat in 2020, nor any other office in the future". Defense Secretary Jim Mattis presented flags to Cindy McCain and Roberta McCain, the senator's 106-year-old mother.

"So we went out there and there was nothing left", Jacob said.

The appointment means Trump could have a reliable vote for the rest of the year.

As ET previously reported, John died at the age of 81 at his home in Arizona, surrounded by his family.

While their remarks made clear their admiration for him, they also represented a repudiation of President Donald Trump's brand of tough-talking, divisive politics. I think it is boorish.
