Ayanna Pressley’s Reaction To Her Historic Victory Is Everything

Pressley, who is now Boston's first Black city councilor, handily defeated 10-term incumbent Democratic State Representative Michael Capuano in Tuesday's Democratic state primary.

REUTERS/Brian SnyderIncumbent U.S. Representative Mike Capuano (D-MA) speaks to reporters after voting in the Massachusetts Primary Election in Somerville, Massachusetts, U.S., September 4, 2018. That was about the residents of the MA 7th congressional district who I have legislated in partnership with, who I have governed with these last eight years on the Boston City Council.

In his concession speech, Capuano said the district was clearly upset with the status quo and that he shared those feelings.

Ayanna Pressley, touted as the next Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, just won a MA primary.

"This is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our democracy", Pressley said Tuesday while campaigning in the district.

There is no Republican on the ballot in this Democratic bastion - an urban district that encompasses Boston, Cambridge and surrounding suburbs, much of the area once represented by a young John F. Kennedy, and now often called the "Kennedy seat".

Pressley, 44, is a Chicago native, former community organizer, and former political aide who worked for Democrats such as Senator John Kerry.

Pressley and other insurgents have drawn the attention of new voters whose support Democrats will need again, said María Urbina, national political director of Indivisible, a nationwide network that formed previous year to resist Trump.

After Ayanna Pressley won her race Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez hailed her as a "sister in service".

Pressley may be considered an outsider by virtue of who she is.

The 7th District encompasses Boston's residential neighborhoods and its surrounding suburbs, with large Hispanic, black and Asian populations, and is the state's only majority-minority district.

Pressley will become the first black member of the House from MA, as there are no Republicans running in this district in the general election. However, in liberal Boston, progressivism is nothing new. "It does point to a generational shift and this notion that a lot of folks are not waiting their turn in the way they might have years ago".

Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican who regularly shows up in opinion polls as one of the most popular USA governors, is also expected to be re-elected.

Two other Democratic House incumbents, William Keating and Joe Kennedy, fended off primary challenges on Tuesday. The votes decided who advances to the November general election to run for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and other offices. "We might vote the same way, but we will lead differently".
