Seiko - A new US Open title for Novak Djokovic

Seiko - A new US Open title for Novak Djokovic

And by beating Argentine third seed Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the final, the 31-year-old Serb overtook Federer in terms of career prize money - although as we will see, he still has a long way to go to catch the Swiss when it comes to off-court earnings.

Newly-crowned US Open champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have jumped up in the recent tennis rankings.

Juan Martin del Potro was gracious in defeat and said Djokovic can end his career as the most successful Grand Slam title victor, surpassing Roger Federer's current mark of 20.

The atmosphere ignited again in the second set when Del Potro broke back to level at 3-3, before Djokovic silenced them with a courageous hold - after a 20-minute game lasting 22 points and in which he saved three break points to level at 4-4.

He is now set to rise to third in the ATP rankings behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the only two men to have claimed more slam titles, but can justifiably claim to be the best player in the world at present. Roger Federer leads with 20 Grand Slam titles, and Rafael Nadal shows off 17 in the museum at his academy in Manacor, Spain.

The Serb, who was back in the final for an eighth time and contesting his 23rd Grand Slam final - the third most in men's tennis history - was serving exceptionally well and earned a break in the eighth game after showing tremendous patience before successfully serving out the set. Victory also means that 50 of the last 55 majors have been win by the "Big Four" of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray. For Djokovic, it was an illustration of him growing into the championships as he took his run of consecutive sets won to 14, stretching back to the second round against Tennys Sandgren.

Backed by his singing boys, Del Potro roared back in the set by breaking Djokovic to go back on serve. Her grandfather, who lives in Nemuro, Hokkaido, expressed his joy, saying, "I want her to make a spectacular showing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, too".

Djokovic was better than del Potro on their many lengthy exchanges, using his trademark body-twisting, limb-splaying court coverage to get to almost every ball, sneakers squeaking around the blue court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the roof was closed because of rain. Not against Djokovic, who always seemed to have all the answers.

For Djokovic, this has been a triumphant summer after his difficulties of the past two years and the low of elbow surgery in February.

Statistically, the men's final was relatively even.

In one charge at the net, Djokovic picked a del Potro volley off his toes and sent back a victor.

Despite defeat, world number three Del Potro remained proud after an achievement he never thought would have been possible during his injury hell.

While Streep was beside herself, Jerry Seinfeld had more of a skeptical look. 1 and 2, respectively, while Germany's Angelique Kerber climbed one place to 3.

"Of course, I'm sad because I lost but I'm happy for Novak and his team".
