Ugandan politician Bobi Wine detained upon return home

Ugandan security forces swiftly took pop star and opposition lawmaker Bobi Wine into custody when he arrived from the United States on Thursday, further angering supporters who have protested his alleged torture by security forces and a treason charge.

The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, had sought treatment in the USA for injuries allegedly sustained during state torture, which Uganda's government denies.

Staff at JKIA were excited as they scampered for a photo with the youthful politician.

"What we have done is to escort him from Entebbe airport to his home", Ochola said.

Since being elected to the National Assembly in 2017, 36-year-old Kyagulanyi has emerged as a spokesman for Ugandan youth and a virulent critic of President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.

The government denies allegations of corruption and of stifling opposition. Residents in his neighbourhood told Reuters that they had attempted to wait for him on streets near his home but were chased away by security forces.

Yesterday police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said they had received intelligence information that some people were being being given red T-shirts to take part in processions to welcome the legislator.

Mr Museveni, 74, is now able to seek re-election in 2021 because parliament passed legislation previous year removing a clause in the constitution that prevented anyone over 75 from holding the presidency.

Residents of Magere in Wakiso District broke into celebrations after Bobi Wine was eventually driven to home by security forces at around 2.50pm on Thursday afternoon. Armoured personnel carriers and police vehicles lined the highway.

He faces treason charges, alongside more than 30 others, after Museveni's motorcade was stoned by opposition supporters during a by-election in the northwestern town of Arua last month. "I am on the mission already, I am on the fight for freedom and liberty already", he said, surrounded by throngs of people.
