Woods seizes share of the lead at Tour Championship

Rose, 38, who has two tour wins this season and nine in his career, bounced back from a bogey-bogey start to post a 68.

Tiger Woods reacts on the seventh hole during the second round of the Tour Championship golf tournament at East Lake Golf Club.

Woods considers it a victory to have made it to the Tour Championship coming off a fourth back surgery.

He would finish with a round-of-the-day 65 for a three-stroke lead over Rose and Rory McIlroy.

Woods began the third round tied with Justin Rose for the lead at seven-under.

"The crowds were electric because of it, " Rose said. Woods birdied the opening hole, while Rose bogeyed the fifth. It was a slow bleed for Fowler, who went birdie-free over his last 12 holes and shot 39 on the back nine for a 72.

Woods won the 2007 Tour Championship here by eight strokes after taking a three-stroke lead into the final round.

There used to be no chance against Woods when he was atop the leaderboard going into the final round.

Woods has not been the closer of old in his return this year from a spinal fusion, most notably at the British Open at Carnoustie where he charged into the lead halfway through the final round before faltering. But also I realized how much golf there was to play.

"I was able to do that in Europe in '07 and it gave me a tremendous amount of pride but to do it against the best players in the world on this tour would be incredible". "My body is so different now than it was then". "That helps. I don't have to shoot 63 or 64 and hope I get help".

Behind Woods, McIlroy is lurking menacingly after carding a four-under-par 66. He missed several good birdie opportunities as poor putting continues to plague him.

Woods was in the middle of a sparkling third-round at The Tour Championship when his odds at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas shortened to 9-1, making him the favorite to win the Green Jacket in April. "I'll put the blinkers on and just worry about myself". He narrowed the gap with a birdie on the 16th as Woods had to scramble for bogey, a two-shot swing.

"I hit so many quality shots all day, whether it was tee to green or it was putts", Woods said after his round. Tiger added another birdie and now has six birdies over his first seven holes. "I've had hot days, I've had hot stretches, but I haven't been consistent day in, day out". I'm seeing the arc of the putts.

His last blown 54-hole lead was a 2-shot advantage over Y.E. Yang at the 2009 PGA Championship. "It's a great feeling". A Saturday 65 for Woods was the lowest in the 30-man field. He even replaced Woods as the face of the EA Sports golf franchise that year.

Rose forgot about Woods and tried to beat East Lake, a game of match play in his mind, in a bid to stay in the game. But they've never competed with the stakes as high as they are this week.

"The rough's brutal", Woods said. "We haven't done that that much of late because I've not been there".

This one is heating up nicely.
