However, Brentford gave themselves hope by reducing the deficit in the second half, with Alan Judge converting from a free kick in the 58th minute, guiding the ball over the wall and into the back of the net.

The fact that Welbeck was not allowed to take home the matchball will have done little to dampen his mood, though, as his goals not only helped Arsenal to a 3-1 win, but also served as a timely reminder to Emery that he remains a useful option in attack. Danny Welbeck is working with this commitment and when he is playing also with a performance like today, and I think he's helping the team and we want this. This is a good team with good players - good offensively and very sound tactically. The 27-year-old has scored four goals in six appearances for his club this season.

"He's a great player, we see it every day in training and he's had lots of great performances in the under-23s", Welbeck told Arsenal's official website.

Welbeck continued to cause the Brentford defence all kinds of trouble in the opening 45 minutes and he doubled his tally with an easy finish in the 37th minute, after some great work from Alex Iwobi and Nacho Monreal. I know they are in the previous year of their contract with the team, and they are working and speaking with the club.

He continued: "There are three things when we are speaking about an individual".

"But the performance and the commitment is very high".

It was straightfoward for Arsenal up to that point - but Brentford made them sweat after the restart.
