Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies in NL Wild Card Game

Jon Lester, their October-tested starter was on the mound. During the month of September, Lester was 4-1 with a 1.52 ERA, shaking off a shaky few months after the All-Star Break to help the Cubs back to the postseason for a franchise-record fourth-straight season. The Rockies were in this very same game last season and lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-8. Anthony Rizzo's solo shot accounted for the Cubs' lone run in a 3-1 loss to Milwaukee, while Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story hit back-to-back blasts to get the Rockies on the board in their 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. And the Cubs were playing at home, where a packed house was on hand to try to help them get over the hump.

There is no rest for the tired as the Chicago Cubs host the Colorado Rockies in the 2018 National League Wild Card Game at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

"We've got to stop worry about other teams", Baez said pregame Tuesday.

Cubs skipper Joe Maddon says in many ways the fact that the 162-game season comes down to an extra game to decide the national Central division champion shows why in his view baseball is the ideal sport.

"I don't know if there is anybody better in the big leagues in a situation like this", said Cubs infielder Daniel Murphy, who faced Lester in the 2015 playoffs with the Mets and the 2017 postseason with the Nationals.

The Cubs caught a break in the sixth after Ian Happ walked leading off and Kris Bryant lofted a fly to right that David Dahl watched fall in for a single, putting two on with one out. He's also set a new career high in appearances this season.
