He said they would develop options, if not finalize, the location and timing of a second Trump-Kim summit.

United Kingdom betting company Ladbrokes put US President Donald Trump second in the betting with former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont in third.

Pompeo has repeatedly refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a USA position on North Korea's demand for a declared end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of its main known nuclear facility.

Arriving in Seoul after spending several hours in Pyongyang on his fourth trip to North Korea, Pompeo tweeted that he and Kim had "good talks" and that they "continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore summit", referring to the historic June meeting between Trump and Kim that resulted in a vague agreement for the North to denuclearize.

In the run up to the announcement the bookies' odds pointed towards the Koreans, or Donald Trump. The US has called for a comprehensive accord and strict enforcement of sanctions on North Korea in the meantime.

He has also distanced himself from an earlier stated goal of achieving North Korea's nuclear weapons abandonment by the end of Trump's term in January 2021.

In the past few days, North Korea has also renewed its demands for sanctions to be eased. "Maybe we will get further than that", said the top United States diplomat. "I would really like to see him go in there and lay out the vision for how do we get to a peace regime, step-by-step".

Pompeo told Moon that he and Kim discussed denuclearization steps to be taken by the North and the issue of US government inspection of those actions, which Washington has been calling for, as well as the measures the United States would conduct in return, according to Moon's press secretary Yoon Young-chan.

While Washington is resisting calls from Russian Federation and China to relax tough global sanctions against North Korea, some former US officials say the so-called "maximum pressure" campaign is diminished by Trump's sometimes undiplomatic rhetoric.

"His actions have helped put the nail in coffin of maximum pressure".

Last year's prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

But he declined to comment when asked if he would agree to North Korean demands for a declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War or to South Korea's suggestion that to break the current stalemate, he should avoid pressing again for an inventory of North Korea's nuclear weapons.

While in Seoul, Pompeo will meet with President Moon Jae-in and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha. In Beijing, he is meeting with his counterparts and likely will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Some recent awards have been controversial: former U.S. president Barack Obama won in 2009 after less than a year in office, and the European Union won in 2012.
