Fresh leaks in Khashoggi case Turkish press runs new pictures

A man holds a poster of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a protest organized by members of the Turkish-Arabic Media Association at the entrance to Saudi Arabia's consulate on October 8, 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. The fallout could reshape alliances in the region, where the seeking to stabilize Syria, contain Iranian weapons development and support a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen's civil war.

He told "Fox & Friends" a few hours earlier, "I don't like it".

It's not the first time Paul has brought a resolution to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia. But senior members of Congress with access to US intelligence reporting feared the worst. In both calls, they asked for more details and for the Saudi government to be transparent in the investigation process.

The White House said Wednesday top Trump administration officials have spoken to Salman about the mysterious disappearance of Khashoggi.

Many renowned US intellectuals also called on the Trump administration to pressure the Saudi government to shed light on the Khashoggi case. Kushner has actively cultivated Mohammed bin Salman as a key ally, praising the young leader, dining with him in Washington and Riyadh and hosting one-on-one phone calls with him outside of normal diplomatic channels. But Trump has often talked down to Saudi officials by asserting that the "protecting" them, therefore they need to pay more money in exchange for this protection.

The lawmakers signed a letter demanding a human rights probe into the Khashoggi case, the Saudi journalist who went missing last week during a visit to his country's consulate in Turkey.

She added: "We don't have the facts yet".

"We're being very tough", Trump said.

"Because many believe that it is Trump's kind of special relation with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman which emboldens the latter to execute reckless, irresponsible and unsafe policies inside Saudi Arabia and outside of it", he said.

"I recognised his photograph immediately", said Ghanem al-Dosari, a Saudi satirist living in exile in London, who knew Mr Mutreb socially.

Turkish officials claim that Mr Khashoggi was murdered within its walls. Khaled Saffuri, an Arab American political activist, told the Post that Khashoggi had discussed these offers with them and said that he would never take an offer like this seriously. Turkish officials quoted in media have said he was killed but Riyadh denies that.

Meanwhile, Turkish presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin told state-run news agency Anadolu that Turkey and Saudi Arabia have agreed to form a joint working group to look into what happened. It could pave the way for sanctions, including against high ranking officials in the Saudi government.

Earlier Wednesday, Corker, who as the Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has seen US intelligence reports, said that "the likelihood is he was killed on the day he walked into the consulate" and that "there was Saudi involvement" in whatever happened to Khashoggi.

"Therefore, we request that you make a determination on the imposition of sanctions pursuant to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act with respect to any foreign person responsible for such a violation related to Mr. Khashoggi".

He also questioned assertions by Saudi authorities that the consulate does not have footage of Khashoggi leaving the building as the mission's security cameras only provide live footage and do not record images.

The Associated Press could not confirm that report, but a USA -based friend of Khashoggi said the journalist had told him he had received a call from an adviser to the Saudi royal court in late May or early June urging him to return to his homeland.

Saffuri said he asked Khashoggi if he would return.

Nevertheless, the Post's report raises questions about what duty USA intelligence agencies may have had to warn Khashoggi that he was in danger, if they did know of a plot to capture him.
