Cyclone Leslie Injures 27 as It Slams Into Coast of Portugal

More than 200 power lines were affected by the storm, according to reports citing power authority EDP.

Hurricane-force winds have brought down hundreds of trees and left more than 15,000 homes without power in Portugal. Some flights were also cancelled or delayed. "It will therefore arrive a bit earlier than predicted and a bit further north of Lisbon", Portugal's civil protection chief Luis Belo Costa told reporters on Saturday evening.

Extremadura has also asked its citizens to be very careful if they travel on the roads, warning of possible landslides, flooding of roads and also warned people not to park in dry riverbeds.

The exact trajectory of the hurricane, however, remains uncertain due to the presence of another storm approaching the region from the north, Portugal's meteorological institute said.

At Mealhada, in Aveiro district, the roof blew off an indoor sports stadium putting an end to the European final of the women's roller hockey competition.

It is rare for an Atlantic hurricane to reach the Iberian peninsula, with only five such events recorded.

Hurricane Leslie has become post-tropical in the far eastern Atlantic, slamming into Portugal and Spain. Yet, parts of Virginia are still seeing unsafe wind gusts, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Amet) said Leslie was moving north-east through the peninsula.

In Spain, winds of up to 100 km/h uprooted trees in the center of the country early on Sunday morning.

Hurricane Leslie is in its last day, but it is a surprising threat to Portugal and Spain. This media house does not correct any spelling or grammatical error within press releases and commentaries.
