Virat Kohli becomes fastest batsman to reach 10000 ODI runs

Indian captain Virat Kohli's record achievement of being the fastest to reach 10,000 ODI runs has drawn applause from many including former skipper Sourav Ganguly who opined that the 29-year old is no less than his batting partner and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli went past the 81 he needed against West Indies to go to 10,000 ODI runs in 205 innings, beating Tendulkar who reached the mark in 259 innings. He bettered his own record of 1000 runs in a year in 15 matches set in 2012 and Hashim amla's record in same number of matches in 2010.

"I am at a loss of words to describe Virat Kohli's performance". Kohli became only the 4th Indian and 13th batsman overall to achieve this feat. "You still have to work hard for every run that you score at the worldwide level", Kohli told BCCI.TV on Thursday.

The historic run against West Indies was part of his 37th ton in ODIs as he made an unbeaten 157 from 129 balls in India's total of 321-6 from 50 overs. He is now the world's No.1 batsman in both the Test and one-day formats. However, Kohli has certainly taken this generation of cricket to a different level.

At 40 for two in the ninth over, Rayudu joined his skipper and the two played fluently to keep the run rate healthy.

With the way Kohli is performing, Tendulkar's mark of 49 ODI centuries, the most by a cricketer is under a huge threat. However, his average reads a mind-boggling 144.71 which is the best by any batsman with minimum 1000 runs in a year in ODIs.

In the first match against the Caribbean side, Kohli notched up his 36th ODI hundred as he stroked his way to a breezy 140, helping the home team take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
