Magnitude 6.8 quake hits off Greece

Attention was focused on the island of Zakynthos, where reports indicated power was out.

The quake struck at 1.54 am and was followed about half an hour later by a 5.2 aftershock.

In particular the quake was felt on Zakynthos, where a series of after shocks were strong, with the highest figure being 5.6.

'We are not facing any particular problems, ' Zakynthos Mayor Pavlos Kolokotsas told Greek state broadcaster ERT. A tsunami warning was briefly issued by the Greek authorities but has been withdrawn.

The natural disaster rattled the whole of western Greece and was strongly felt in the capital, 174 miles to the north-east of Zakynthos.

Both U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), assessed the quake as a magnitude 6.8.

Dozens of aftershocks have rattled the Ionian island of Zakynthos and regions further afield following a powerful natural disaster on Friday morning. 'Calm is being restored'. The village of Mouzaki is near the popular tourist resort of Laganas.

"We are expecting a big afterquake of up to 5.7 magnitude but it will be much smaller than the main quake". Earthquake-resistant buildings on Greek island Zakynthos survive 6.4 quake: "no injuries reported", said the United Nations office for disaster and risk reduction.

"It felt like it lasted five minutes but realistically it was only 10 seconds".

Greece lies in one of the world's most earthquake- prone regions, with thousands of quakes recorded every year.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said sea level changes were observed after the natural disaster.

Zakynthos is an island which has strict building safety codes due to the number of quakes that occur.
