Khashoggi's body was 'dissolved' after murder: Erdogan advisor

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called senior American officials recently to urge that Washington not abandon its support for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman amid growing criticism over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, according to multiple reports.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible". The president, however, "will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime", Pompeo stressed Thursday.

Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz, who waited outside the consulate as the journalist entered to obtain documents for their upcoming marriage, said what was done to his body was "brutal, barbaric and ruthless".

People hold posters picturing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and lightened candles during a gathering outside the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, on October 25, 2018.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a rare meeting with American evangelical Christians as the conservative kingdom seeks to open up more to the world and fix an image of religious intolerance.

The Israeli PM had asked top United States officials recently not to abandon their support for bin Salman over the killing of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Turkey's Istanbul, according to multiple reports.

"The tragic and unjustified" slaying of Khashoggi "is the theme of today's onslaught and demonization of Saudi Arabia in the same fashion as the previous crises".

According to The Washington Post, Netanyahu has specifically told the White House that the crown prince is a key strategic partner and a linchpin of the US-Israeli front against Iran's regional influence.

In a statement to the newspaper, Khashoggi's family denied he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and said the murdered writer had himself denied this repeatedly in recent years.

The crown prince stated Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, prior to Saudi Arabia formally acknowledging it was responsible for the journalist's death.

President Trump has said he is "not satisfied" with the Saudi account.

Fidan, the Istanbul prosecutor, on Wednesday said that Khashoggi was strangled shortly after entering the consulate and that his body was dismembered afterward.

US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino on Thursday called for Khashoggi's remains to be located and returned to his family for burial as soon as possible.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said it was an appalling act, adding that it had "possibly" given the USA and the UK a chance to put new pressure on Saudi Arabia over other issues.
