"Of course, I'm very, very happy and proud about it".

Cilic, who will make the cut for London if he downs Djokovic, ended reigning ATP Finals champion Dimitrov's season.

The former world No. 3 also had an injury-riddled 2017 campaign, including a seven-week absence due to wrist surgery that cost him a chance to play at that season's U.S. Open.

Djokovic established his quarterfinal clash with fifth-seeded Marin Cilic.

Although Djokovic leads Cilic 15-3 overall, Cilic won two of their past three matches - including two years ago in the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

Roger Federer celebrates after winning his third round match against Italy's Fabio Fognini in Paris, France, on Nov 1, 2018.

New No. 1 Novak Djokovic continued his bid to finish the year on top and the Serb won his 20th straight, this one by retirement as Damir Dzumhur had to stop down 6-1, 2-1.

The 10th-seeded Nishikori did not face break points in beating the seventh-seeded Anderson - the Wimbledon runner-up to Djokovic - 6-4, 6-4. "If I can do well here in Paris and beat (Djokovic), all the better", Federer said.

As he was preparing to serve out the game he noticed a commotion behind him after a male spectator sitting in the front row appeared to faint. "It's been a hard year for me in terms of injuries, and so I'd prefer to avoid doing anything drastic", he told the media minutes before his intended match against compatriot Fernando Verdasco who instead faced-and lost to-Tunisian lucky loser Malek Jaziri.

Karen Khachanov saved two match points against John Isner on his way to defeating the eighth-seeded American 6-4, 6-7 (9/11), 7-6 (10/8).

Bulgarian ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov, who is working with USA legend Andre Agassi in Paris, went through with a 7-6 (12/10), 6-4 victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Roger Federer also advanced to Thursday's third round after big-serving Milos Raonic retired before their match with a right elbow injury. Round 3 may bring the ever-improving power player, Karen Khachanov, and this quarter is topped by Alexander Zverev, whose debut here past year ended in the second round.

Fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev booked his place in the next round with a 6-4 6-4 win over Frances Tiafoe.

Lucky loser Malek Jaziri replaced Nadal and beat Verdasco 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 and next faces defending champion Jack Sock.
