Driver was huffing before Girl Scout hit-and-run in Lake Hallie

Lake Hallie police have identified the victims as Jayna Kelley, 9, Autum Helgeson, 10, Haylee Hickle, 10, and her mother Sara Jo Schneider, 32. One other girl who was hit survived and was in critical condition Saturday night.

Treu and his unidentified passenger both admitted to "huffing" chemicals prior to the crash, police said. Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls was arrested for the crash.

Lake Hallie police Sgt. Daniel Sokup says the pickup crossed a lane Saturday morning and veered into a roadside ditch, striking the victims. Treu initially fled the scene. Sokup says he will be charged with four homicide counts.

Police said on Monday he had been inhaling cleaning fluid before the crash. Several Girl Scouts sang songs in honor of the victims.

The Girl Scouts were cleaning up rubbish in a grassy area between the rural road and a farm near the Hwy.

The Girl Scout community is also grieving. Many in the crowd held candles and umbrellas in the rain.

"Truly, as a community, this affects everyone one of us". "Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout". They also were on site Sunday.

"This is a hard time for our students, families and staff", Eliopoulos said in a message to parents. "There are a lot of people hurting right now on behalf of our children".

The girls were fourth-graders and members of Troop 3055 in nearby Chippewa Falls, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Minneapolis.

Prosecutors are considering 13 charges against Treu, including four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. One of the girls attended Southview.

The names of the deceased have not been released at the time of this post. He lives in Chippewa Falls. Golden adds, "hearts and prayers are with the girls and their families".

Eliopoulos says it's a "difficult time for our students, families and staff", and that the district will provide support "for as long as needed".

On Monday, there will be additional counseling services available for students and staff.

The three girls killed are Girl Scouts.

The driver fled the area, but later turned himself in.

Colten Treu, 21, sped off after the collision in Lake Hallie Saturday morning, but later surrendered.

The incident is still under investigation by the Lake Hallie Police Department.

Treu was involved in an accident earlier this year in Rusk County. A third girl was rushed to the hospital and died there. Two other children were injured. The other was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Crash occurred at 11:41am.

We'll have updates on the incident as information comes in.
