Defeat Has Liverpool Fans Ridiculing Klopp's Omission Of Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool have left Swiss worldwide Xherdan Shaqiri out of the squad for Tuesday's Champions League tie at Red Star Belgrade, saying they were uncertain over what sort of reception he would receive in the Serbian capital.

Liverpool's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage were dealt a blow as Red Star Belgrade claimed a shock 2-0 win at the Rajko Mitic Stadium. They last played in the European Cup in 1991 as holders, when beating the likes of Liverpool would not have been regarded as such a surprise.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner told United Kingdom broadcaster BT Sport that Liverpool had problems "all over the field" in the first half and never properly recovered.

Milan Pavkov (Red Star Belgrade): Any number of Red Star's defensive shield could lay claim to the award, but it has to go to the man whose two first-half strikes have clinched a famous result.

Red Star moved onto four points, two behind Liverpool, and its home form means it still has a chance of a top-two finish.

"I said it after the first game, I saw it in that game - we were really good that night and if we would have been a little bit less good then immediately Red Star would have been in the game".

Almost three decades on, Red Star don't have a household name in their squad and needed to qualify for the group stage through the playoffs.

Klopp handed a rest to Roberto Firmino with Daniel Sturridge starting up front and the English striker blazed over when it seemed easier to score with the goal at his mercy on 18 minutes.

Gomez put in a solid shift at right back and the reds looked much more comfortable in possession on the right flank after he was introduced, even if they failed to create anything of note going forward.

Pavkov rose highest in a crowded penalty area to power home Marko Marin's corner to spark wild scenes of celebration. Salah takes aim from 25 yards and sees his deflected effort tipped past the post by Borjan. "In the game [we lost our mojo], but not in general", he added.

However, Red Star is a different proposition at the home and a record of 33 games undefeated in all competitions is some achievement.

"We come here as a football team. Away games against top six rivals will be a test for them, but they will beat the rest of the Premier League sides easily and it leads the rest have to reach improbable heights to compete with them".
