Sen. Cruz Projected To Win Re-election After Tough Challenge From O'Rourke

In total, Cruz and O'Rourke raised more than $100 million.

"This was an election about hope and about the future, and the people of Texas rendered a verdict that we want a future with more jobs and more security and more freedom", Cruz told supporters after defeating O'Rourke.

ABC News projected Cruz would win the race at 10:09 p.m. based on exit polls.

The U.S. Senate race in Texas was one of the most closely watched and expensive races in the country.

The Democrat got the endorsement of Texan Willie Nelson, who performed at a rally.

In the end, all of that celebrity backing didn't translate to victory in a reliably red state like Texas. He finishes the interview by saying, "what does Ted Cruz have that you don't have, aside from the ability to regenerate his tail?" According to witnesses, O'Rourke, then in his mid-20s, "lost control of his auto and hit a truck, sending his vehicle careening across the center median into oncoming lanes".

Cruz was backed by his 2016 presidential opponent President Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans.

Cruz did show the humility to pay tribute to O'Rourke for his campaign - as the boos rang out among his supporters - and what he had done to mobilise and energise young voters.

However, O'Rourke ran his campaign with the assumption that pollsters and political operatives have been wrong about Texas.

"Really interesting to hear you talk about a partisan circus after your six years in the US Senate", O'Rourke shot back, alluding to Cruz's role in leading the Republicans in 2013 to shutting down the government. Seeing a candidate you're there to vote for while you're at the polls.

Trump and Cruz were bitter 2016 rivals, but the president visited Houston late last month to solidify the senator's win.

Meanwhile, a comedy bit put the candidates in the national spotlight yet again.

Finally, Cruz tries to get in a zinger about how it was the Democrats who neutered Triumph, and the Insult Comic Dog is ready for it. "Just like Trump did to you".
