Closer and closer: Scott leads by .18 percent, DeSantis by .44

Democrat Andrew Gillum's campaign now says it's prepared for a possible recount in the Florida governor race that he conceded to Republican Ron DeSantis on Tuesday night. If the margin of victory is equal or less than 0.5 percent, state law requires a machine to recount the votes. If the margin is within 0.25%, as it stood Thursday in the Senate race, a hand recount - slower and more thorough than by machine - is ordered.

As clerks counted more ballots Thursday, races for U.S. Senate, governor and agriculture commissioner got closer.

"It has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported", she said in a statement.

Nelson's recount lawyer predicted Thursday morning that the Democratic incumbent would emerge the victor over Gov. Rick Scott as ballots continue to be examined, particularly in heavily Democratic Palm Beach and Broward counties, in advance of an expected recount coming into play this weekend.

Meanwhile, the campaign for Bill Nelson has brought on attorney Marc Elias to handle its recount effort, which at this point appears to be a certainty.

Broward, Florida's second-largest county, is a Democratic stronghold, and the tally favored Democrats by a margin of two-to-one.

Scott's campaign manager Jackie Schutz Zeckman shot back: "They aim to disenfranchise law abiding Florida voters by producing ballots out of thin air until they have enough to win".

But in his victory speech, DeSantis talked little about partisan politics and emphasized the need as the state's next governor to work with all Floridians, including those who opposed him. Governing is about getting things done on behalf of the people of Florida, keeping our economy going, improving our water quality and environment, promoting public safety and expanding educational opportunities.

The current secretary of state, Republican Ken Detzner, was appointed by Scott and has been in the post since February 2012.

They are taking provisional ballots and counting them "even though they're not able to vote", Schlapp said. "Democrats will take every step to ensure that every single ballot is counted and we will be pursuing a recount in Nikki Fried's election for the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs".

Republican candidate for Florida governor Ron DeSantis speaks during an event put on by the Police Benevolent Association in Palm Beach County, on October 3, 2018. Nelson campaign spokesman Dan McLaughlin issued a statement saying that all votes should be counted accurately and that Scott's action "appears to be politically motivated and borne out of desperation".

Florida's U.S. Senate race is also tight, and a recount seems very likely in that contest as well. For the record most times election results are not overturned - but this is Florida.

"Even before the election, we knew that, mysteriously, they would find more ballots". Richard had previously been known for representing Bush during the 2000 recount. "Nelson is going to be declared the victor", Elias said.

"I am pretty confident what you are going to see are markings that were not picked up by the machines or a calibration issue that was not registering that part of the ballot", he said.

Republican Senate candidate Rick Scott speaks to supporters at an election watch party, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, in Naples, Fla. In the meantime, a few remaining county elections supervisors are feverishly reviewing any vote-by-mail ballots they have not yet counted.

The competitive race - widely viewed as a proxy war between the progressive left and the far-right - attracted intense national scrutiny, with Democrats hopeful for a win amid a surge in voter turnout.
