Blitzboks Beaten By Fiji in Dubai Extra-Time Thriller

The US against France makes up the fourth quarter-final, with the semi-finals and final to be played tomorrow as well.

England had earlier faced New Zealand in one of two incredible Cup semi-finals.

A Canada turnover led to a Nathan-Wong converted try at the strike of halftime for a 12-7 New Zealand lead at the break.

In Saturday's men's knockout section, Scotland lost in the quarter-finals to New Zealand, who scored three tries in the first 11 minutes and won 21-7, Harvey Elms scoring for the Scots.

Meanwhile injury-hit New Zealand won the opening round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, defeating the US 21-5 in the Dubai Sevens final.

A stunning breakaway try from 18-year-old Lily Dick earned the Australian women's team a bronze medal at the Dubai Sevens as they edged out the United States of America 26-21 in a thrilling third place play-off.

There was to be no first Dubai title for usa, though, as tries by Dylan Collier and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black ensured it would be New Zealand celebrating a long-awaited sixth Dubai title.

The turning point came when Bianca Farella was sin-binned for a high tackle, and New Zealand took advantage with a scrappy run by Stacey Waaka and Nathan-Wong's second, insurance try.

England finished top of Pool B with three wins, impressively beating the Olympic champions Australia 26-12 in their first match.

Wales were also made to do without one of their main strike runners, Ryan Conbeer, who was injured in a typically ferocious collision in the opening minutes of the match against New Zealand. However, Waisea Nacuqu had other ideas and his breakaway try levelled the scores, only for Vilimoni Botitu to step up and miss the straightforward conversion to mean extra-time would decide the victor.

Connor Braid scored two tries and Luke McCloskey added a single in a losing cause against Australia.

Only Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia finished pool play unbeaten.

"We lost five games here past year". Of course, it has to be remembered that the team is in a rebuilding phase following the departure of several stalwarts, but they will be mightily disappointed with a sixth-place finish in Dubai. I mean come on, how good is that?

The next stop in the Sevens Series takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, next weekend.

Canada will face Zimbabwe in the consolation Challenge Trophy quarterfinal.
