Putin briefs Trump over Ukraine as EU leaders up pressure

Her meeting with Putin in Argentina took place a week after Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian ships and 24 crew members in a clash in the Kerch Strait, an important shipping channel that links the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

"We had a brief talk with Trump; I answered his questions about the Black Sea incident".

Russia accused the Ukrainian vessels of violating Russian territorial waters, a charge Ukraine has denied. Pompeo said Trump made this decision to "tell the Russians return the sailors, return the Ukranian equipment, it is theirs, people need to be returned to their families--he wanted to send an unambiguous message that the Russians need to change that".

Putin said that Ukrainian Navy boats had illegally crossed into Russian waters last week and drew a diagram of the violation.

December 1, Putin's aide, Yury Ushakov, said that the Russian president and the USA leader still greeted each other at the G20 summit.

"The freedom of shipping traffic in the Sea of Azov. must be ensured".

Trump's administration has accused Russian Federation of non-compliance with the 31-year-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty and has said it will pull out of the deal as a result.

The naval clash came as the Ukrainian ships sailed to the Kerch Strait, the only waterway leading into the Sea of Azov and the site of a new key Russian bridge linking occupied Crimea with the Russian mainland.

The November 25 incident was the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since Russian Federation annexed Crimea in 2014.

The politician says that such actions have to be the response to the capture of Ukrainian military vessels in the Black Sea.

He also denounced Ukraine's call to shut global ports for Russian vessels based in Crimea, calling the suggestion "a new edition of gunboat diplomacy".

The martial law order included a ban on entry to Ukraine of all Russian males aged 16 to 60, a move Poroshenko said is created to prevent undercover Russian military units from infiltrating the country.
