He also addressed the president as "Donald" in arguing the tariffs need to be removed.

"In the USA, the new trade pact will support high-paying manufacturing jobs and promote greater access for American exports across the range of sectors including our farming, manufacturing and service industries", Trump said.

He signed the agreement with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a ceremony on the margins of a Group of 20 summit in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires.

The USMCA covers such areas as tariffs, automobile industry, the intellectual property rights, labour standards, protection of the environment and agriculture and would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

In March, Trump - who has has repeatedly called NAFTA "the worst trade deal ever" - tweeted that the steel and aluminum levies would "only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed".

"There's much more work to do in lowering trade barriers and in fostering growth that benefits everyone", Trudeau said.

Given that continuity, a number of family farm organizations from the USA and Canada including the National Farmers Union Canada and the US -based National Family Farm Coalition have urged a better deal, one "that promotes fair and sustainable food systems".

Both changes are created to encourage more auto production in the United States in a reflection of U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" mantra.

Trump himself acknowledged that it hadn't been easy, but said "battles sometimes make great friendships".

And dairy remains a sticking point with the influential Canadian dairy lobby urging Trudeau's government not to sign the trade deal as it gives the United States expanded access to Canada's dairy, egg, and poultry markets.

Canada's dairy lobby urged Trudeau this week not to sign the agreement unless it was changed to give the USA less influence over the industry. The Trump administration dubbed the agreement the U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

"There's some good signs", Trump said.

Trump noted the signing in Argentina comes on the last day in office for the Mexican president, who is being succeeded by leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, elected five months ago. "We don't like their representative much", Trump said in late September, potentially referring to Freeland.

"We began with a very strong USA demand that we abolish the system of [dairy] supply management entirely", Ms. Freeland said.

"Make no mistake, we will stand up for our workers and fight for their families and their communities", he said.

It didn't take long before it was noticed that the acronym added an A to 'USMC, ' the United States Marine Corps.

U.S. President Donald Trump never really took to NAFTA as a name brand. The agreement includes a new rule, for example, that a vehicle will only be freed from tariffs if 40 per cent or more of its contents are produced by workers earning $16 (U.S.) per hour or more. The news ensured any meeting with Putin would have put a spotlight on the special counsel's investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow during the campaign.

However, the new deal does not resolve the punishing steel and aluminum tariffs imposed worldwide earlier this year, and on Mexico and Canada since May.

That subject is a hot topic, especially as Trump prepares to meet face-to-face with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
