Jose Mourinho says Marcus Rashford was Manchester United's 'mad dog' at Southampton

De Gea is easily better than the pair and has certainly been United's best player in recent years. Although, Mourinho's freakish team selection, fielding five central midfielders and no wingers, gave Pogba few options when he was on the ball.

The deal gives United more time to work out a long-term deal with De Gea, with Jose Mourinho suggesting earlier in the week that a contract can be agreed upon. "And you kill the mentality of the good honest people around you", Mourinho reportedly added during his rant at Pogba.

Pogba, 25, returned to the team after being benched for the Red Devils' midweek Champions League victory over Young Boys.

Six minutes later, it was 2-2 when Rashford got to the byline and cut the ball into the six-yard box, where Herrera nipped in front of his marker to score with a cute back-heel that McCarthy got a hand to but could not keep out.

Jose Mourinho had set up his defence as a back five - including central midfielders Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay.

"Doesn't matter the system we play", Mourinho said. "It was nothing to do with the system and Matic and McTominay did a very positive job for two midfield players".

"We lost so many balls in midfield, so many balls in our transition to the last third that it was hard to have that continuity", Mourinho told BT Sport. I think it is the only reason.

'In the second half we went back again to that dynamic where we lose too many balls midfield.

"There were examples of players fighting to the limits - Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and many others - showing that respect for the shirt and for the club".

"It was not like we had 10 minutes to win it, we had 45 minutes, so for me obviously it was not a good result".

Third placed Tottenham are now nine points clear of Manchester United, who are in seventh place with 21 points, in the Premier League table.

But Mourinho feels the time when they could take their pick of the standout talents at domestic rivals is over.
